Write to Publish? Or Write to Write?

Here is a quick Question:

Do you write to write OR do you write to publish?

Yes there is a difference, a big difference. Do you know why your write?  For example do you write a journal in hope that you will get more ideas so that the people who might read something you have written will see how you have improved?  Or do you write simply as a hobby with no real intention to make money, but you will admit that making money writing is nice?

Do you know why your goal is to be published?  Is it because you believe you have something of value to say to your readers, and that you will go to any challenges to show your readers why you write in the first place?  Or is it to have a book published as fast as you can so that whatever you have can increase profits?  Is the answer somewhere in between the two?

Did you know that as a writer, of say a blog, your are already published? Does this scare you knowing that your blog is one way that people see you as a writer?  If that scares you then it might be time to think about how you can build up your writing, and write to publish to some great readers/

For the most part, I write to be published, and it's material that is commissioned. But I want to make more time this year to write to write, not for publication. To dig out stories that don't have publishing homes out of my brain, put them on paper. To have the freedom creatively speaking to write anything I want to write, without having to think about whether the material is publishable yet. That, for me, would be such a joy. I used to do that, early in my career, and I miss it.
