Does Publishing Aricles Online Help Your Writing?

If you write a blog, or you have a few ebooks out there, the topic of writing a few articles will come up.  For some writers the idea of writing on a few online websites is an option to get more people to come to your blog, and then they can go to your other websites, and buy your books.

This is the theory, at least.

Most writers need their readers to see their writing and to value it in some way, but they also need to market or promote their blogs so that people will come and read their blogs.  This is where publishing articles online might help.

Here is the idea in principle: you write an article in a certain topic that has a minimum word count, then you add a couple of links to your blogs, and submit it to an article directory.  Now, readers come and read your article and can use it as reference material on their blogs, as long as the link is still there.

Again this is good, in theory.

Publishing articles online is something most anyone with any writing ability can do, but it does not mean it will help you.  In fact for some writers this can be a real “time eater.”  While they could be working on their WIP or another press release for their book, they write and publish an unrelated 500 word article for another website.  But remember, this isn’t about making money with these articles but rather promoting your work.

You are a writer who needs to create some drive for your books that you have spent so much time working on, but if you spend too much time focusing on writing that might not help you move forward, then it can harm your long-term chances of seeing success with your books.

The reason?  Your writing is “too” out there.  People can find it and use it, and at some point, you might be tempted to use blog posts to add as articles.  Then this causes more confusion.  However, there is a great benefit to doing this.  You get the much needed readers coming to your blogs and seeing your writing.

Publishing articles online is something that all writers need to consider for their writing career.  You will need to ask a lot of questions to see if this is the best way for you to go.
