On Writing, The Beatles, Music and 10,000 Hours

Writing is something that comes naturally to many people that write as a hobby but also write as living. It is something that writers will spend time on building and trying the rhythms to. It can be all about getting the words right.

That is why many writers find that by simply taking the time to build their work, they also find something musical about the process. Often it is listening to music while writing or working with something that needs a “beat.”

What is certain is that musicians, who write their own songs, also talk about how they looked for the words, finding ways and rewriting their work to make it flow better. It almost seems to be a good way to edit. With musicians and writing, do not believe that all musicians are writers (although some will suggest that they are) just as writers are not musicians.

They do have a lot in common, that is if they are truly devoted to the craft of expression and want to excel they will also push themselves to be better. To be stronger and of course to learn. One will go to music school, and the other to writing school (classes if you will) and there they learn to build upon what they want to develop. It is not an easy task.

It is also not something that can be done in a short time frame. I read a book and it has one interesting fact that for true success there is a period of about 10,000 hours of work on the chosen task. Now by this the author points out a few facts which music and writing intersect (this is the author of the tipping point) is the hours you put in make you a professional.

He points out that the Beatles were such a set of writers and musicians, in this case in Hamburg, one of them made mention that they would write and sing at least 8 hours a day. When someone is that dedicated to getting the words and music right, they are certain to see success. The Beatles saw success.

With writing it is the same, the more hours on puts in the more likely that they will see success, and (possibly) make money, however as a creative force, writers have to work just as long and as hard to give their work a good chance to see success.  It might be all about promotion, but if what you are promoting is not that good, then you will find that you still have a long way to go.
