What does publishing Mean to you?

What does publishing mean to you?

A good book in your hands?

A Legacy?

A new way of looking at the world?

A byline?

What does it mean to you to say I’ve published a book?

Joy?

Money?

Happiness?

Wealth?

What are the Challenges in publishing a book?

Time?

Money?

Loss of spare time?

When I say publishing, what does that mean to you?

Hmmm… not as straightforward a question as it seems at first blush.

I think legacy is part of it, recognition may also factor in (though neither of these is automatically bestowed just by being published).

I think a sense of pride and accomplishment are big parts of it. I think meeting a challenegs is a big part of it.

It's also something of an honour to know that of all the many, many, many manuscripts a publisher receives, YOURS was the ne they chose… out of all the entries in the slush pile.

I think there is a certain amount of validation in being published as well.

Abpve is my best guess as to what it means to be published. Might be easier to say what it doesn't mean, primarily money (if you're writing to get rich, think again). It's also not easy (and I don't simply mean the writing of the MS itself, but all the PR and promo you do in addition to writing the book).

It's scary as Hell too, very worrisome. Will it sell? Will it be reviewed? Will it get a good review? Will anyone show up at the signing/meet & greet I've booked? Will the publisher pick up teh option on the next book…

    It is a worry. Huge.

ANd I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!!!

    Cheers, Jill

Not as easy as they seem, since you want to answer all the questions right away, and this may not be the case.

See the one word answers… well… I'll think about it.
