Writing

Writers and Coming Out LGBT

I hesitate to write this post, and I am even more hesitant to publish it.  Not because I can’t but because I know I have to.  I want to, I do, but I am terrified of the end results.

Yet… I am going to publish this, all about who I am as a person.  I am a writer, and passionate about the person I am and the person I can become, a proud beautiful person who has something to say and to share.

This blog post all began with a challenge.  I suspect in an effort to get me out of my rut with writing even more, I was asked to post a few things about myself.  Some things most people would not know about me, and some of my feelings about them.

1. I love various TV shows. Sherlock, Star Trek, Quantum Leap, Transformers, you name it I’ve probably seen it. I like some— the show Elementary comes to mind, but I watch them on occasion, I enjoy them but I won’t go out of my way to see them. I also watch too many documentaries to count  if you have seen Life After People, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

I’m a TV nut, it allows me to breakaway from writing for a bit and allows my mind to think up more ideas.  I love coming up with ideas mid news show that I can share with my readers on my blog.

2. I love to sing- badly I might add, but I love to sing. Give me a melody and I’ll hum it all day if I could. I like to write, but that goes without saying, I need to have music at some point during the day to help me work.  The best is Motown- always will be in my mind.  Writing is my great love, and I enjoy it, and it is a part of me.

I have a wonderful group of people writing with me, and they have improved this blog.  It’s a melody I hope never ends, writing is a big part of my life as much as singing is, but I know I won’t make money as a singer.

3. I’m a lesbian. If this one fact about me, makes you uncomfortable, so be it, I’ve already had my fair share of insults and slurs because of it… so see the above to points to understand I am human.

I don’t have a reason to be mean to others, as a matter of course I would hope I am a good person.  That and I think I am awesome- but I am a lesbian, it doesn’t affect who I am as a writer.   This added fact makes me want to succeed more than anything else in the world.  I am human, I write, and I just happen to have some wonderful readers.

Why do I write?  Because of you my readers.

The more I realize that once this blog post is published, I’ve laid it out a lot of me- it’s personal now.  In a sense this will break me out of my writing stagnation.  I know that people will like it, or they won’t but the point is, this is what publishing is about: being scared and taking a risk.

This is what panics me, and yet, I hope that it inspires you to write and to be bold.

Somes times, even publishing gives me panic attacks, but it means that it’s my turn to follow my dreams, and be a better person and writer.

There is one person who inspired me to write and publish this, so to my writing partner in crime Jordan, you will have to give him my thanks.

I am not happy with your "choice." You are wrong and in the end you will die for this sin. Jesus Loves You.

  • John

This is you: The sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,

  • Anonymous

Jordan must be ashamed of you. He will leave this blog because of YOU! He is a much better writer than you will ever be. Shame on you!

  • Elizabeth

wish you all the best. You are a good writer, but you need to be great and then it won't matter what these people think

  • Anonymous

You must hate guys or something, that's why your a les, because I don't understand how Jordan puts up with you if she was a guy.

  • lois yeung

You are some courageous. Don't let those haters put you down. You should keep on writing. Didn't you say Jordan was a man?

  • Anonymous

I am a Christian and I am saddened by your choice to live this life of sin. I pray that the LORD MY GOD will help you see the deep error of your path.

  • Anonymous

bible says you are wrong:For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature

  • Anonymous

See look even your writing pals don't defend you… bc they no ur wrong. No one wants 2 defend you at all!!!

READ THIS! If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

You are horrible person and writer.

  • Amanda

You are either very brave or very stupid. Either way if you knew what was going to happen you must have been prepared. I doubt it. All the best.

  • Ashley-Ann Jones

Very sad to read about your choice. I enjoyed learning about you, except for your lifestyle choice. I am going to have to agree with many hear that none of your writing partners on either blog have stood up in support of your choice.

Must be sad to be alone.

  • Carrie Eckles

Bravo to you for saying how you feel. You must be doing something right to accumulate all these haters. Writing your truth makes you a good writer; just because it's not theirs, they get whiny about it. It's emotionally immature and pathetic. And I say this being straighter than straight and a Christian. ("Judge not lest ye be judged," assholes. Jesus, your God, said that. Leviticus was written by crotchety old men, but go ahead and continue to hold onto old bullshit that's actually anti-Jesus if that's the only way for you to manage the raging discomfort you feel with your own sexuality.) I'm not a lesbian, but some of my best friends are. You shouldn't have to be scared of saying who you are. And I'm glad you're not letting these shit stains get you down. Stay strong and keep writing!

  • Maribelle

I am a Christian and I don't agree with what you have written. You seem nice enough but you are deluding yourself into belief of lies by the evil one. I will pray you see the light.

When one is full of sin and hatered one becomes like you… full of shame and self-loathig. You were right to worry in this post. You know shame. I will not read your shamefilled writing again. You will be judged.

  • Anonymous

YOU GO SISTER! FORGET THOSE HATERS!!!!!!! I will continue to follow your blog. (I thought Jordan was a man?)

  • Anonymous

It proves you have not support! you don't have your "partners" support. And they are all females. really sad day when bad writers win. Even Jordan and the ghost Jane (is she real?) don't defend you and the "8enough". All these women must be shamed for you.

  • Anonymous

Jesus will save you. Stop watching these shows promoting evil, they have trapped you. Many will not defend you knowing that you are ill. Sek help.

  • Martha H.

Hello I am Martha. I do not agree with your choice but you are brave. Keep on writing. Shouldn't matter if you ladies and gentleman here do exactly that.

YOU ARE SELFISH AND CRUEL. NO ONE CARES FOR SOMEONE LIKE YOU THAT IS WHY YOU WORRIED ABOUT TELLING PEOPLE YOU HATE WILL SHOW. YOU SELFABSORBED WOMAN. YOU DON'T HAVE SUPPORTERS YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS SHUN YOU AND HATE YOU. NOT ONE DEFEND YOU AND YOU WAYS. YOU ARE ILL AND NEED HELP!

  • A loyal reader

Hahahahahahahaha!!! Oh my my goodness! Rebecca!!!! You know I have been visiting your blog for years commenting on your posts, and I have never seen so many responses. EVER! Do these people all mean all it took for them to comment on your blog is for you to mention that you are lesbian? REALLY? OK. Next week? Do it again, so we can see more traffic like this again 🙂

Firstly, I thought most people knew by now that being gay or lesbian is not a choice.

And quite frankly, your comments about Rebecca's sexuality reflects badly on your in the blogosphere, certainly not on her.

Secondly, I have a hard time believing… I can see it.. but I cannot believe that out of all the things Rebecca spoke about in her post, what you took away was the fact that Rebecca likes girls. Nor can I believe that you feel compelled to comment your disapproval. That's how you demonstrate God's love and grace?

Rebecca is an adult woman and doesn't need your permission to be herself, as much as you don't need her to believe in your religion.

And yeah, those who love and care for Rebecca would defend her. Not that she needs it, because honestly, the only people who need defending are the ones attacking her.

From an outsider's point of view? I see a group of people who seem to believe that their way is the only way, and that it's OK to attack those who are different from you. .

Oh! And I'm not defending her because I'm lesbian either. There is no gay agenda here.

I live in a country that practiced apartheid and what I'm reading here is another form of it. You can try to defend it with your religion if you like ( our old government did too) but it 100% still looks like a group of people trying to take another's right just to be.

  • AnotherReader

I am neither gay nor lesbian, but what has been said here is an afront to these writers.

People might not agree with another person's life, but it is their life. As a writer, and someone who knows miss. Rebecca I am astonished at this hate.

    Is is a great person.

  • Anonymous

What are you thinking? I liked you before this… but this is wrong. I might continue to read this blog, but my view remains that as some have said love the sinner, and hate the sin.

  • Cheryl

My favourite part about all of this is how you're still positive.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but Rebecca doesn't deserve this. Get with the times, people. Stop hating on someone for being a lesbian. Your god will not condemn her, as she is a good person.

The people who are posting as anonymous are even more pathetic. Hiding behind the anonymity of the internet to spew your hatred beliefs will hopefully keep you warm at night, because I now know that there isn't a drop of warmth in your souls.

  • Rebecca E.

    Cheryl– my thanks.

Anon– well, I am sure series four will be better in terms of Sherlock. I've been watching more Elementary lately and it's growing on me. Did you see all three series 3 episodes yet?

Readers ext who have supported me– my thanks.

biblival truth: Understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.

    Wrong to be in sin

  • Anonymous

trust in GOD to save you:A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.

  • LoyalReaderSINCE 2009

I didn't like season 3 of Sherlock… too dumbed down for my taste. I loved season one and two. I also enjoy Motown. Any other music you like?

Oh.. and for the record, I don't care about point number 3. You are beautiful so don't let anyone get you down.

  • Rachel

Rebecca- no matter what you will always have my support. You are a lovely human, and that is the only thing that counts. I am in awe of how strong you are.

This post will make you a better writer. You made your readers care, and your rut is probably over because of this.

  • Anonymous

Wow, let me just say that I'm so proud of you for posting this! I also wish I was surprised to see so much backlash but sadly we still live in a world where people think it's alright to judge others in a truly horrifying way.

I've only known you now for a few months but in that time you've always been a brave, kind, wonderful person! I just want you to know that there are far more of us who support you and really care about you then there are terrible bigots.

Seeing the responses here has made me sad that the world we live in is still so close-minded but knowing that there are wonderful people like you out there makes me feel a bit better. Stay strong Rebecca. You're amazing!

    – Heather

  • Leah

Rebecca – you should not be ashamed for being who you are. Do not let these people fool you. Who you love is not a choice. There is nothing wrong with loving someone. You know what is wrong? Hatred. That is something these people have, that makes them bitter and angry and mean, but you don't have it. You could lash out and swear at them, but you don't. You are better than them. Don't forget that.

  • Leah

Hey, all you condemners and haters:

Guess what? Biblical law is not laid down for some, it is laid down for everyone. You can't just cherry pick who is and isn't a sinner, especially when you say god will judge her. Let god judge her then, but you are not god, so leave her alone. She is a good person, and according to your bible, that is what matters. So why don't you try following this:

"'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than this" — Mark 12:31

And to the people who are saying Rebecca must hate guys and that's why she's gay/ you're sad for her because she can't find a "special guy" – maybe you were trying to be nice, but try being on the right side of history.

Anyone who called Rebecca ill, is wrong. There is nothing wrong with her, and you are not a psychiatrist so step off.

And trust me – she does have many defenders, but they are in her real life. Once you meet Rebecca you learn that she is a great person. So, just because we didn't all come and comment on this blog right away doesn't mean she doesn't have our support. You all have so much time on your hands to sit around and spread hateful messages… that's not the breed of person she hangs out with. We were probably working or reading books or doing something more useful than bitching on the internet.

She was too nice to call you out on your crap, so that's why I did it. (Sorry, Rebecca, if I overstepped). You people have no idea who you're picking on – she'd never do this to anyone, and that's why she's better than you.

Do you honestly think that a HACK like you will ever be successful? Dumb. Really dumb. Go back to watching your TV, and being so damn lazy.

  • jessica

The more comments I read the sadder I got. I see you have some defenders, but most are just here to hurt you.

Keep on writing and when you publish that bestseller and it gets into a movie, remember who loves you.

  • Anonymous

It isn't right. It isn't right, even the bible tells you so. If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

I doubt that you can read. You can't even write. You might think you can but you can't. Shame all the people think otherwise.

  • JASE

YOU POOR ECUSE FOR A WRITER. NEEDS PUBLICITY LIKE THIS AND BAD WRITE. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR WRITING FROM? SUCKS TO BE ANYONE WHO KNOWS YOU. YOU ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A MISERABLE PERSON NO ONE GIVES ABOUT YOU. YOU AREN'T EVEN WORTH A MOMENT OF LOE FORM ANYONE- THAT'S WHY YOUR THIS WAY.

  • William

I am not happy with your "choice." You are deadly wrong and in the end you will die for this sin. Jesus Loves You, even though you will die for this "choice"

  • Jason

Sorry you are this way. But you are't born this way, it's a choice… and you're such a bad women.

  • Anonymous

Why don't you just get a life? It seems ya don't have one, and you are such an evil woman, I hope your family abandons you so you learn your lesson.

  • rachel

I really love how all those who comment on immorality and religion are always posting "Anonymously" Because they don't have the guts to tell people their names. Clearly they are trolls who have nothing better to do with their lives than make someone- who is doing something great with their life- feel bad about themselves. Which you don't. You pronounce your sexuality because it is part of you, and is part of your writing persona. I myself never feel the need to discuss that aspect of my life because in this day and age I just like to think that people will respect you for your work- regardless of who you are as a sexual person. I didn't know that Lily Tomlin was a lesbian until a few years ago, and she's had a partner for over 46 years. Once you decide to let people know about that aspect of your life I find that it tends to pull out the cowards and uneducated to rant about something they know nothing about ( especially so called forward Christian thinkers.) Which is bull. You are a writer. They don't want to read what you write. They don't have to. They are entitled to their opinion but that's all it is. It doesn't define you or who you are. Bravo for not being anonymous!!

  • Mystique Wizzard

After having read a great amount of comments, and feel saddened by the judgmental so called "Christians" I come to tell you, my Sweet Beccs…Let them keep on thinking whatever they want…I guarantee you Creator loves you mightily…I celebrate your openness and bravery…Your choice is yours and Creator respects that…Never allow anyone to disrespect you, moonshine… IF you have to lose some fake fans.. so be it..You`d rather have few truthful and sincere readers than a bunch of phonies… I wholeheartedly agree with Rachel…She speaks from the heart…Thank you Rachel, Beccs needs followers like yourself… Keep them coming, my sweet moonshine…YOU ROCK!!! LUV YA LOTS!!! ♥♥♥

  • Paul

Sorry to see someone i respected fall down this path. You pathetic excuse! You think you're brave? You are nothing, your evil, your hateful, your a disgrace to the race of love.

  • Anonymous

Do you even know what the hell you're talking about? Do you? You're so lost, an so pathetic, that's why you like woman- can't be friends with men, you are lesbian because of it.

  • Anonymous

Be open about being immoral, this 'choice' this excuse for being evil- I'll never see you as anything more.

  • Liz Mallory

Congratulations on coming out on your blog!!! Authenticity, and especially being true to yourself *in your writing,* is the most freeing thing ever. I'm a bi Christian writer and I applaud you!

I hope you are surrounded by loving and supportive people who can help you deal with haters and celebrate with you! I hope you have the courage to never give up or shut up. I hope you feel comfortable writing LGBTQIA characters, because we don't have enough of those, and books like that will help the next generation be more tolerant.

I don't know what you believe, but my God isn't like some of these people are saying; He made us the way we are on purpose and celebrates his fantastic design. He wants us to love who we love wholeheartedly. I hope you don't think we're all nasty people. Some of us actually believe in the Bible's admonition to "love your neighbor as yourself, for this sums up the law and the prophets."

From one out queer to another, woohoo for you!!!!!

  • Ursula Jordaan

Honestly appalled at some of these remarks.

As someone who prefers to date women and write…as well as watch TV, eat chocolate, go to the gym, laugh with friends, sleep, pray, hike, dance awkwardly… you get my gist; I continue to visualize that the tiny blue planet we live on will come to terms with humanity and accept that it's a divine right to be who are, not just a human right.

May your characters be as true and authentic as you are.

You are a wonderful writer! Please don't let the negative comments get you down. Honestly, I really admire you for not retaliating in kind. As an EM I have experienced prejudice, but nothing like what I have seen here.
I am a Christian. I do not believe in your lifestyle, but I am not going to hate on you. That's just wrong.
    Have a wonderful night!

Ok, you have inspired me to come out and share that I too also share one of your deepest darkest secrets and I don't care who knows anymore. I've seen every episode of Quantum Leap at least twice, and have followed Scott Bakula's often trying career ever since …

  • Mfrederick

I have been reading your blog posts on and off all day today. (I just met you today). You're an incredibly talented writer and deserve the recognition you've received. As for the personal things you shared here–I hold zero judgments for anyone about anything. It's not part of our true nature as humans to do this. Everyone is living their dream within this dream. Everyone sees, essentially, the same reality but with the exception of a tiny fraction, in which we perceive differently. I am not suggesting that any perceived reality, choice, lifestyle, haircut, clothes etc. is "right" or "wrong." What I am suggesting is that we are all connected…literally. I have much respect for you for posting this because I know, that you know, what I am talking about. The fact that one human can be offended by the choices or lifestyle of another human is far beyond my comprehension–especially when it has no effect on their personal choices or freedoms. By the way, I stopped reading the comments when someone mentioned the bible…
