Can You Make Money By Blogging If You Are a Writer?

Writers need money.  The fact that you have something to say is important, but how you say it allows you to make something that you want.  If you write a blog, you have followers, and you want to have someone read your writing.  However, not only do they need money they need it from as many sources as they can get.

There are so many websites out there that can confirm that making money blogging is a long term effort and that you shouldn’t give up on it right away.  The problem you face as a writer is that there is not enough time in the day to be able to do all the work that it will take to create and design and build and write a blog that makes you money.  (This is part of the reason why we also upgraded the blog, we wanted it to look more modern and professional)

You should ask why should you care is you make money by blogging?  After all, you are a writer, and you can publish another book that will help you with income.

Publishing a book is simple, but it is only method of earning income.  There are other ways a writer can earn some extra income, and one of them is by blogging.  The reasons you should blog are twofold. First, it gives you a chance to expose your writing to a larger audience, and second, it provides the potential to make money for you.  You also need to brand yourself and look better as a writer.

There are a few things that you need to consider when you think about how to make that money. The blog is a part of your writing business. If you want to have a following so that when you publish another book, you have an audience who will buy and read it, you need a forum to talk about your writing, and make some money, too.

How much money?  According to a ProBlogger survey, most bloggers do not generate a lot of income through their blogs, and those who do have been writing and working with a blog for more than 4 years.  You could argue that you can make more money by publishing a book, and you can contemplate that theory as well.  If you are a writer, this becomes more of a challenge because you need not only to create good blog posts that people want to read, but you have to focus on writing more.

You could think about money in terms of eggs and baskets.  Writing more blog posts is a good beginning,  but if you focus on how to increase whatever you like on your blog, you have to choose what you will stop doing in the meantime.  This is a business, and if you don’t have a professional looking blog, you won’t make money. That also takes time, and you also need to have a good team around you to guide you and help make your blog better.

You also need to spend time on your older blog posts.  The ones which have a higher number of “page views” are a good starting point, and if you find that a particular post needs to be revamped, then you revamp it — especially if it means that you can earn money more from a good post.  Again, it takes time, and if you don’t have the time to do this, there can be a problem.  You can earn income, but you have to invest the time.  By doing this you also protect yourself when a book does not sell as well as you hoped or if your book is delayed.
