Why Do You Want to Self-Publish a Book?

Your book, your work in progress is complete, and you want to do something more with it.  First you have to edit your book, and then edit it again.  After this you have to take a deep breath and a big step.  You have to see what the market for your soon to be published book will be like.

Once you have looked into the market you need to make some choices.  One of these is whether or not to self-publish your book.  You can choose to go this route, but you have to go into it with eyes wide open, and not complaining when the going gets harder than you had first thought in either time or money.

After making your choice, and if you know that self-publishing is the means to grow your business and create future book sales, you need to begin looking for ways to get your work self-published that will work within your budget.

The other question to answer is: do you truly want to self-publish a book?

There are many answers to this question, and it is similar to asking “do you want to write?”  You might say, well, I decided to self-publish so that is exactly what I am going to do.  I wanted to self-publish in the first place so why are you asking this question?

The reasons you choose self-publish depend on your choices.  For example, if you think that your writing is great but people do not understand you, that is a bad reason to self-publish, but at the same time it is a good reason to improve your writing.

But, if you think that the market is a niche market and sales would spike quickly and then drop off, then you probably want to self-publish but only after you do your research.

In this case, the better question might be do you want to self-publish after doing all the research that will make it a good idea?

I've done both traditional and indie publishing and one thing people need to know is how much more control (ALL OF IT) the author has via self-publishing.

Either way, writing and publishing a book takes a ton of effort, and another ton of effort to promote it (whether you're indie or traditional).
