What Is The Definition of a Published Work? Does a Blog Count?

As writers we want to publish our work, and we’ve heard the thing of all you have to do is write, and then publish a book.  It doesn’t matter where just avoid a vanity press.  Go and self-publish or get a literary agent, or a traditional publisher.

What most people do not think about is their blogs.

Blogs count, and they count because we as writers need to count them as published works.  It can be as simple as “pushing the publish button” but it is still published.

If this is the case, then to publish a post you are publishing and you can even go as far as to say that you are publishing online and writing online, and that this will be for the consumption of your readers.  which is why you can even extend that to publishing your blog into a book format.

I agree with you only up to a point. Yes, blog posts are published works. The challenge is that, for others to regard as "legitimate" they have to recognise their value. It's a slippery slope yes, because I may see value in X's published posts and someone else may just see the posts as tripe cluttering the internet. I've heard people say, how can a blog post have value if there is no gatekeeper to make sure that only quality material is published?
I don't necessarily agree with them, because i have derived great value from blogs. But it is an issue, I think?
