Publishing and Money Issues

It seems whenever I make mention that I am going to self-publish a book someone always, or almost always makes the comment: Doesn’t that cost you a lot of money?

Okay there is a little issue when talking about publishing, or at least self-publishing, the money issue. How much are you wanting to spend on your pet project?

Some people will go to Google and type in the words “publishing” Now when I did this something very interesting happened, in the top ten results I found, trafford and lulu in the list. They were nine and five, respectively.

What interested me more was the “sponsored links” Author House, Publish America, and iUniverse all in the first page sponsored links. Now, i do not believe that these are self-publishing companies, beyond the fact that they price gouge but they do not offer the ability to use your own ISBN.

Really it doesn’t cost much to self-publish a couple of hundred dollars really, and you should get some books for that. In fact I can get a set of ISBNs in Canada for my books at a fairly reasonable price… this to me means I would be a self-published author.

So here is the question: How much money would you spend in terms of money to be a self-published author?

The amount I would spend is proportional to how confident I was that there is a market for what I would be publishing. On the low end for something just to claim the title of "published author," I would say somewhere south of 300. If it was something that I knew would do reasonably well and could hold its own, I would be willing to put at least a few thousand into it.
