Publishing and Marketing = Who Pays?

So Barbara asked a pretty good question yesterday in the comments section:

Here’s the general question do traditional publishers pay for all your marketing?

I asked a few people and the general answer is no, not for everything, especially if the book isn’t selling well or doesn’t have much more potential, then the marketing money comes out of your pocket.

But in general they don’t pay for everything… unless of course you are a big name for them or have a lot of potential as in another book which might help the one you just published.
