Custom Publishing and Money Matters

I’ve heard the great debate about “Custom Publishing” and money.  It seems that for many the very thought of custom publishing brings on visions of some sort of vanity press.  To them it means this is a money matter and people are worried right now about money.

To my writers of writing:

When I say custom publishing what does that mean to you?

Does Custom publishing really a money matter to you?

If I understand the question correctly, I can only offer this observation. I've seen and read many self published books that were poorly done and probably never would have nade it into print otherwise. Now if we were still living in the early days of the 20th century when there were fewer people writing with an eye to publishing–those magical days when publishers actively sought out writers with even marginal talent but who had a good story to tell (think Margaret Mitchell), when editors knew how to edit and help train good writers, these vanity presses wouldn't be able to flourish as they do today. I would have problems believing my work was good enough for mainstream if I self published. Not right, not wrong, just the way I think.
